In this Post-apocalyptic fiction novel "The Road" , the author, Cormac McCarthy, used a loving and selfless tone to show how the demise of the father helped bring meaning to the story. Through out all of the challenges they encounter, the dad managed to hold his composure and continue to encourage his son to push through and that everything will be alright.
As the boy and his father started their journey to the other side of the world, he begins to question his father's motive and purpose for living. His father answers ,"If you died I would want to die too." The reader will better understand that the boy is what keeps the father alive and motivated to continue this journey. The father is slowly dying but he knows that his son is not really ready to be on his own and understand the things that he has to do in order to survive. Because the majority of their home has been swept away, the remaining survivors had to find another source of food, cannibalism. The dad and his son encounters a man as he goes into the trees for a pit stop. This guy has been searching for food and he spots the little boy. After threatening to blow the man's brains out of his head, the man stated" I bet that boy is hungry. Why don't you all just come on to the truck?" The audience can infer that the man is trying to trick them into getting into his truck so that they could turn into him and his friends's next meal. if it came down to going with the man and his friends, the father would risk his own life to make sure that the boy was safe. When they continued their journey, they stopped and visited what looked like an abandoned house. In the house there were big suitcases filled with clothes and weapons. The owners of the home then arrived and they rushed to escape. to prepare his son for what might happen, the father told his son to," Put in your mouth and point it up." The dad did not want his son to get taken and eaten so he did what he thought was best, which was to teach him how to take his own life.
The author of "The Road" , Cormac McCarthy, displayed the effects of the demise of the father in a loving and self-sacrificing tone. The innocance and ignorance of his son motivated the father not to give up on life. While trying to protect his son he also tried to protect himself which was a struggle. Before he died from his sickness he wanted to teach his son how to live on his own. He taught him to only trust "The Good Guys" and to do what he has to do to stay away from "The Bad Guys" even if it was to take his own life. McCarthy created a focus on a father and his son love story despite the fact that they were in the middle of a Post-apocolyptic town.
